American 4th July Celebrations
Well,Wednesday July 4th I went with 4 other friends down to Bellingham, WA in the USA to watch and experience my first true American 4th of July celebrations. It was quite interesting and fun, and in a lot of peoples backyards people were letting off their own fireworks displays – which apparently is illegal in every other city in the USA.
We went to Appleby’s for dinner (interesting place not bad for a chain restaurant – had a really nice burger there), and our waitress was really nice and gave us directions to the shore to see the major fireworks display from. From our vantage point we were able to view the whole shore and see the mini fireworks displays going off all along the coast. It was quite a view and spectacle. Even right by us there was a place and one of the guys there was letting off quite a decent display for everyone to see. Once the major display started at 10.30 we were far enough away that there was a general 2-3 sec wait between the lights and the sound, so it was quite interesting and add a little bit of amusement to the evening (that and the fact that the music being played (apparently what you play at fireworks displays in the US) was marching band music.
The big show lasted about 20 mins before it finished and we got in the car to leave, cross over the US/Canada boarder again and get back to Vancouver at about 1am. It was a fun evening and well worth the trip.
